Cedar Rapids Alvin F. “Al” Kucera, 84, of Cedar Rapids, passed away after a short illness March 12, 2008. Memorial services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel, with visitation preceding from 9 to 11 a.m.

Al was born Sept. 19, 1923, son of Frank and Anna Kucera in Cedar Rapids. He served in World War II as a carrier-based naval aviator (bomber pilot) on the USS Intrepid from 1942-1946. Al attended Coe College and studied under Marvin Cone in 1946. He was a 1948 graduate of the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. Al was united in marriage to Marian Weaver on Feb. 12, 1949. He was a partner in LaCombe/Kucera and Associates Inc., where he retired in 1983.

Al left behind his wife of 59 years, Marian; and daughter, Nancy (Steve) Barry; two sons, Barry (Sue) and Brian (Mary Pat); four grandchildren, Ryan Kucera, Anna Kucera-Pint, JoAnn Adams and Kelly Bruce; and three great-grandchildren, Alex, Dakota and Cole.

Al was a member of Hanford American Legion Post 5 and the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art. He was an avid sports fan, especially of the Hawkeyes and Cubs. He enjoyed golf at Ellis Park and fishing at his home on Ellis Boulevard.

Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be sent to the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art or the Hospital Dentistry Institute at University Hospitals in Iowa City.
